Sales Tax Increase, Statement of Policy Preference
The Protecting Arizona's Family Coalition (PAFCO) board supports the increase in the sales tax and urges voters to vote YES on the referral on May 18, 2010.
Clearly the state needs new and increased revenues after over 15 years of tax cuts which, along with this deep recession, have severely curtailed state revenues.
We support this increase reluctantly, but in keeping with our principles which urge new revenues and tax reform in the state.
º Health and human services must be shielded from further cuts. This new revenue is necessary but does NOT solve the budget crisis.
º
Even with this new revenue, the Governor and Legislature still propose and require severe and deep cuts to health and human services programs which serve children, families and vulnerable adults.
º
We strongly oppose these additional cuts.
º
Arizona's poor families must be protected.
º
The overall tax structure must be reformed.
º
Tax cuts are wrong in the current economy.
º
We oppose any tax cuts until the state economy is fully recovered.
º
We must not dig the revenue hole deeper.
º
More bipartisan solutions are needed.
